I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main valve for your property. If you are unable to find the tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the home to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, clear away any important possessions from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
