I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to resolve the problem.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start cleaning up any water, put a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away valuable items from the area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
