I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important items close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
