I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any important things from the area, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
