I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating tap to cut off all the water to your property.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time of the day or night. We’ll be at your place as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, begin mopping up any water, put a container to catch any drips, and clear away significant items from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
