I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber to arrive, clear away any significant items, mop up any water, and put a container to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.
