I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While you wait, begin wiping up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away valuable possessions from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
